Dada Manifesto (1916, Hugo Ball)

Read at the first public by Dada soirée, Zurich, July 14, 1916 by Hugo Ball Dada is a new tendency in art. One can tell this from the fact that until now nobody knew anything about it, and tomorrow everyone in Zurich will be talking about it. Dada comes from the dictionary. It is terribly simple. In French it means "hobby horse." In German it means "good-bye," "Get off my back," "Be seeing you sometime." In Romanian: "Yes, indeed, you are right, that's it. But of course, yes, definitely, right." And so forth. An International word. Just a word, and the word a movement. Very easy to understand. Quite terribly simple. To make of it an artistic tendency must mean that one is anticipating complications. Dada psychology, dada Germany cum indigestion and fog paroxysm, dada literature, dada bourgeoisie, and yourselves, honoured poets, who are always writing with words but never writing the word itself, who are always writing around th...

Cat Is My Name

Cat is my name Cat is my name, sometimes I am Pussy,   I purr and I prowl and I preen. I sleep most the day, dreaming ‘careers’, jobs of eating and sleeping, catching a bird, chasing fast mice and self-licking. I’m part of great memes, $$$ just follow me on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook. I meow and I scratch, I rub myself on you to show my affection or great instinct. I’m said to have many lives, but I don’t care about that, just let me sleep unmolested, sun shining. I’ve been blamed for many deaths, of natives and others, I don’t understand all I do. I can live many years, nowhere near human spans, I come domesticated, wild, and in different breeds. I’m flexible, curious, and cute, so come on over and look, just don’t be offended if I ignore you! The Importance of Being Dada (Marsden Hartley, 1921)

The Following Essay was written by Marsden Hartley and was included in the Book:   Adventures in the arts: informal chapters on painters, vaudeville and poets . New York: Boni and Liveright, 1921. Pages 247 - 254.  We are indebted to Tristan Tzara and his followers for the newest and perhaps the most important doctrinary insistence as applied to art which has appeared in a long time.  Dada-ism is the latest phase of modernism in painting as well as in literature, and carries with it all the passion for freedom of expression which Marinetti sponsored so loudly in his futuristic manifestos. It adds likewise an exhilarating quality of nihilism, imbibed, as it is said, directly from the author of Zarathustra.  Reading a fragment of the documentary statement of Dada-ism, we find that the charm of the idea exists mainly in the fact that they wish all things levelled in the mind of man to the degree of commonplaceness which is typical and peculiar to it. Nothing ...

Wine Is My Name

Wine is my name Wine is my name, most of you want and need me. I pour red, white, and pink, sparkling and still, I can be stored in bottles and barrels for years. I am tasted as sport, I am swallowed and spat, I am celebrated, imbibed, and released. I look good in glass, I’m now even in cans, you can taste me in church, with some people claiming to reach Heaven, Nirvana, with me. I inspire friendship, calm, and reflection, I am behind many poems, great prose and art. I can make people feel tipsy and sleepy. I’ve been called medicinal and poison depending on how much time you spend with me. I have been around for so long that many people can’t imagine life without me. It’s great to be loved, hold and taste me! Tool Is My Name

Tool is my name Tool is my name, which could be seen to be rather unfortunate, I can be used in many ways. I’ll throw you a Hammer, a Spanner, a Screw, you can use me in bed or to make it. I have my own kit, box, and shed, Tradies all use me all day. I can assist with your floor, ceiling, and walls, I can bang things together or take things apart. When people get angry they call out my name, especially if they think that someone’s been stupid. A great band has been named after me, so let’s all sing together: Tool is my name! Come and use me!
